On Saturday, October 24, 2026, on the first night of the 28th Hip Hop al Parque festival at Simón Bolívar Park in Bogotá, Colombia, the rapper Chelo Hop debuted her new song «Anatomía», produced by AstrallBass, then stomped on an Israeli flag on stage while the crowd chanted "Free Palestine." The clips went everywhere. It was reported by El Espectador, Semana, Publimetro and World Israel News.
I was born in Bogotá. Hip hop raised me. And I'm a proud Jew and a proud Zionist. So this one hits me from all three sides.
I'm not here to send a mob after anybody. I'm here to talk about what you can't see from the stage: a generation shouting slogans about a people it knows almost nothing about.
Who is Chelo Hop?
Per the official Hip Hop al Parque 2026 artist page, Chelo Hop is a Colombian rap project led by Karol Restrepo González with producer AstrallBass, selected by the city in the MCs Distritales category. Her lyrics deal with identity, resistance and the female experience. At the festival she debuted «Anatomía», described by several outlets as the title track of her upcoming album. Bogotá city councilman Andrés Barrios Bernal said she also wiped her shoes on the flag and kicked it, and called it antisemitism paid for with public money.
What happened, just the facts
- Where and when: Hip Hop al Parque 2026, Bogotá's free city-run festival, October 24–25. The city says more than 77,000 people attended.
- What happened: during her set, the artist stepped on an Israeli flag and kept performing. "Palestina libre" could be heard from the crowd.
- The response: on Monday the 26th, Israel's ambassador to Colombia, Vivian Aisen, posted on X: "I categorically reject the act of trampling the flag of the State of Israel, one of Colombia's great allies." She asked: "What would happen if the flag of Colombia were trampled in a public square in another country?" And she closed: "Respect cannot have double standards."
- Official word: she tagged Mayor Carlos Fernando Galán, the city arts institute Idartes, and the Foreign Ministry. When those reports came out, none of them had responded, and neither had the artist.
Criticizing a government is not stomping on a people
Anyone can criticize a government. Israelis do it every day, in the streets and in their parliament. That's democracy.
But a flag is not a government. Israel's flag is modeled on the tallit, the Jewish prayer shawl, with its two blue stripes, and at its center is the Magen David, the Star of David. Those are Jewish symbols centuries older than any prime minister. When you stomp on that flag, you're not critiquing a policy. You're stomping on the symbol of an entire people, including the Colombian Jews who identify with it.
The IHRA working definition, the one dozens of governments use, puts it plainly. Criticizing Israel the way you'd criticize any other country is not antisemitism. Denying the Jewish people the right to a nation of their own, or holding Israel to a standard no other country is held to, is. We break it all down in What Is Antisemitism?.
The ambassador's question is the easiest test there is. If somebody stomped on Colombia's flag at a festival abroad, every Colombian would be furious, and rightly so.
The youth's blind spot
Hip hop was born to tell the truth about the block. "Speak on what you know" is rule number one. That's why it hurts to watch people in the culture repeat slogans about something they've never studied.
Try it with anyone chanting "from the river to the sea":
- Which river? Which sea?
- Do you know what happened on October 7, 2023?
- Do you know there are Arab Israelis in Israel's parliament, in its hospitals and on its Supreme Court?
- Do you know the Jewish people have been tied to that land for over 3,000 years, with Jerusalem in their prayers three times a day?
You can have compassion for Palestinian civilians suffering in Gaza. We do, and the Torah demands it of us. That compassion doesn't require you to hate Jews or trample their flag. The people of Gaza's enemy is Hamas, which uses them as human shields.

Crash course: what the world owes the people of Israel
This one's for the folks shouting without knowing. It's not bragging. It's so you know whose house you're standing in.
One G-d, and the dignity of every person
The idea that every human being is created "in the image of G-d" comes from the first page of the Torah (Genesis 1:27). That's the root of what we now call human rights: rich and poor are worth the same. Even Colombia's 1991 Constitution opens by "invoking the protection of God", the G-d the world came to know through Abraham.
Marriage and family
"Therefore a man shall leave his father and his mother, and cling to his wife, and they shall be one flesh" (Genesis 2:24). That idea of marriage as a covenant comes from the Torah. Christianity and Islam inherited it from there.
A day of rest
Before the Torah, nobody guaranteed a worker a day off. Shabbat (Exodus 20:8–11) gave rest even to the servant and the animal. Your weekend has Jewish roots.
The law above the king
The Ten Commandments, and the idea that not even a king is above the law (Deuteronomy 17:18–20), inspired the people who wrote modern constitutions. The Liberty Bell in Philadelphia, the symbol of American independence, carries a verse from the Torah: "Proclaim liberty throughout all the land" (Leviticus 25:10).
The Nobel Prizes
Jews are about 0.2% of the world's population. Yet at least 220 of the roughly 965 individual Nobel laureates from 1901 to 2025 are Jewish or have a Jewish parent: about 22% (list of Jewish Nobel laureates). Physics, medicine, chemistry, economics, literature and peace. Einstein, for starters.
In your pocket and in the field
Israel, a country roughly the size of New Jersey, gave the world drip irrigation (Netafim), which now waters crops across the planet. It also produces tons of tech you use without knowing it: navigation, cybersecurity, medicine.
So what do we do?
- Don't answer hate with hate. Answer it with knowledge. Share this.
- Ask before you shout. When someone at a show starts a chant, ask where it comes from.
- Demand equal respect. The respect we demand for Colombia's flag is owed to every flag and every people.
- Study. Six, one, three: 613 commandments, one Torah, one street. Start at the beginning.
We don't stomp on flags. We raise ours, and we teach you where it comes from.

What happened with the Israeli flag at Hip Hop al Parque 2026?
On Saturday, October 24, 2026, during her set at Hip Hop al Parque in Bogotá's Simón Bolívar Park, the rapper Chelo Hop stepped on an Israeli flag while "Free Palestine" was chanted. Israel's ambassador to Colombia, Vivian Aisen, publicly condemned it and asked Bogotá's mayor's office and Colombia's Foreign Ministry to respond.
What does the Israeli flag mean?
Israel's flag is modeled on the tallit, the Jewish prayer shawl, with two blue stripes on a white field. In the center is the Magen David, the Star of David, a Jewish symbol centuries old. Is criticizing Israel antisemitic?
Not necessarily. Under the IHRA definition, criticizing Israel the way you would criticize any other country is not antisemitism. It is antisemitic to deny the Jewish people the right to their own state, to hold Israel to a double standard demanded of no other nation, or to blame Jews everywhere for what Israel does.
How many Nobel Prizes have Jews won?
At least 220 of roughly 965 individual Nobel laureates from 1901 to 2025 are Jewish or have a Jewish parent, about 22 percent. Jews are only about 0.2 percent of the world's population.
